The Foundation Year
Establish the groundwork for success
UBC Engineering's required foundation year is designed to ensure you have a strong knowledge base from which to build the rest of your academic and professional career. In addition to learning principles of mathematics, physics and chemistry, you exchange ideas and solidify relationships; in upper years, when you and other students are closely associated with your specialties, you – and they – can draw on this knowledge and these relationships to collaborate across specialties and solve complex problems. The foundation year also allows you time to explore the various fields of engineering before choosing one of 11 specialized programs.
Your first year is also about adjusting to learning in your new environment. At UBC Engineering, your academic success is important to us. We provide you with a number of important, ongoing academic support and enhancement programs throughout your first year. Attend the Conference for Learning and Academic Student Success (CLASS), visit the Learning Commons website or go to one of our first-year tutoring sessions or exam-review workshops. All of these programs are designed with you in mind.
