Complementary Studies Electives
See Complementary Studies Courses in the Faculty of Applied Science section of the Calendar.
All engineering students, as a part of a balanced curriculum, must take a number of courses in each of a number of specific areas to fulfill the complementary studies component of the curriculum. Some of these courses are already built into the standard timetables of most programs, although each student must ensure that he or she has successfully completed the courses in all of the following categories.
Professional Development
APSC 450 or equivalent – Professional Engineering Practice: This course is taken during the final year of a student's program.
Communications
APSC 201 – Technical Communication
Students are also reminded of the English requirements that must be passed before continuing beyond certain milestones in their academic programs.
Engineering Economics
All engineering programs include a 3-credit engineering economics course, usually taken in third or fourth year. Approved courses include: CHBE 459, CIVL 403, EECE 450, MECH 431, MINE 396 and MTRL 455.
Impact of Technology on Society
Course work totaling 3 or more credits exploring the impacts of technology on society is required. Approved courses include APSC 261, APSC 262, APSC 364, CIVL 200, CPSC 430, GEOG 122, GEOG 310, HIST 215, HIST 425, PHIL 435, POLI 361, SOCI 260 and URST 200. Students in the Civil Engineering program must take CIVL 200. Other engineering students may take any of the listed courses, or other courses approved by the Dean's Office.
If a 6-credit course is taken to fulfill this complementary studies requirement, 3 of the credits may be applied to the Humanities and Social Sciences requirement below.
Humanities and Social Sciences
A minimum of 6 credits of course work dealing with aspects of the humanities and/or the social sciences are required. In general, any course offered within the Faculty of Arts satisfies this requirement with the following exceptions: scientific geography courses, statistics courses, studio/performance courses in fine arts, music and theatre, and courses that teach language skills
Technical Electives
See individual program descriptions in the Faculty of Applied Science section of the Calendar.
Prerequisites/Corequisites
When you register for courses, your registration is checked for the necessary prerequisite/corequisite requirement. If you are not permitted to register for a course due of this reason, you need to obtain permission from the department that offers the course or the instructor of the course. However, it is your responsibility to ensure that you have met all of the necessary prerequisites before taking a course. Taking a course without the required prerequisites can easily lead to failure.
