for First Year
PLEASE NOTE: First year engineering standard timetables (STTs) will be available on May 18, 2012 for you to create worklists. You will only be able to register your timetable on/after your assigned registration time.
Before you register, check the Faculty of Applied Science section of the Calendar for information on specific program and year requirements, and on the description of courses.
To register, go to the Student Service Centre and look for the registration link. As an engineering student (other than third- and fourth-year Electrical and Computer Engineering students), you will register for most of your courses using a Standard Timetable (STT) rather than registering on a course-by-course basis. For mathematics course advising in engineering refer to the Engineering Mathematics Guide.
- After you have logged into the registration system,
- click on Standard Timetables from the menu.
- Select the file called BASC. If you are in first year, select the file called Year 1.
- Browse the timetables that are available by clicking on the list shown. If there are multiple STTs for your year and program, choose the one that suits you best. If the timetable is shown as full, choose another.
- Once you have slected a timetable, save the STT to your registration worklist along with any additional required courses for your year and program.
- Remember to register your worklist when your registration date opens.

Standard Timetables (STTs)
Course registration for most years and programs within engineering is done via standard timetables. However, the standard timetables do not contain all the courses a student should take in a particular program and year, so some courses must still be added individually.
The following general rules apply to all Engineering STTs:
- Each STT includes most of the core courses for that year/program/option, with the exceptions listed below. Add missing courses individually after registering for an STT. Elective courses are not included and must be added individually. Exceptions include:
- STTs for students entering first year directly from secondary school do not include the required first-year English course or the required three credits of complementary studies electives. In order to register for these courses, see First-year Engineering in the Faculty of Applied Science in the Calendar.
- STTs for students admitted to first year on transfer from first-year Science will include APSC 122 and 151, and PHYS 170. All other remaining courses must be added on a course-by-course basis.
- You cannot normally register for individual courses unless you have first registered for an STT. However, if you are a second-year student, you should register for individual non-Engineering courses, e.g., Arts or Mathematics courses, before you are notified of the program to which you have been admitted. See Second-year Engineering in the Faculty of Applied Science in the Calendar for more detailed information.
- In the case of multiple STTs (same courses but different section numbers), you may request any STT in the group. You may not get your first choice because the number of places available in each STT is limited.
- If you wish to modify an STT because of exemptions, deficiencies, etc. (e.g., adding courses from a higher year or from another program), consult a faculty or department advisor before registering. Please note the following:
- You need department or Faculty permission before you change sections of any core course in an STT.
- You can, however, drop core courses (e.g., a course you’ve already taken, or a course for which you’ve been granted advance credit or exemption) or add elective courses.
- Make sure you register in all required courses (for both terms).
- The maximum number of credits in which you may be registered is set within the registration system. If you would like to exceed that limit, you must obtain permission from the Engineering Student Services Office.

Mathematics Courses
First-year Mathematics Courses
The normal set of mathematics courses taken during the first-year engineering program include:
- MATH 100 – Differential Calculus with Applications to Physical Sciences and Engineering
- MATH 101 – Integral Calculus with Applications to Physical Sciences and Engineering
- MATH 152 – Linear Systems
However, other mathematics courses may be substituted under special circumstances.
For students who have taken no calculus in high school, MATH 180 can be substituted for MATH 100.
Students who don’t satisfy the prerequisites for MATH 100 or MATH 180 will be required to take MATH 110. Details may be found on the website for the Department of Mathematics. If you are required to take MATH 110 and consequently, you encounter scheduling conflicts within your standard timetable, please contact our office.
The honours mathematics courses, MATH 120 and MATH 121, may be substituted for MATH 100 and MATH 101 if invited to by the Department of Mathematics. Details may be found on the website for the Department of Mathematics.
Students who have scored a 4 or 5 on the AP Calculus AB exam will receive credit for Math 100 or Math 100 and 101 on the AP Calculus BC exam. Students who have scored 6 or better on the higher-level course offered by international baccalaureate programs will receive credit for Math 100 and 101. Official results should be submitted to the Undergraduate Admissions office. Details on the AP or IB credits may be found on the website for the Department of Mathematics.
Students with advanced credits for math courses are recommended to re-take Math 100 and/or Math 101. Please contact the Engineering Student Services office for further details.
Mathematics Course Equivalencies
Students transferring into engineering from other Faculties or institutions and those who have or would like to take mathematics courses during the summer may count certain mathematics courses as equivalent to those required within engineering according to the following table.
