  2. * If you have applied or been admitted to UBC School of Engineering in the Okanagan, there is a separate process. If you have not received information about the process, please contact Maria Graziano at Maria.Graziano@ubc.ca.

Online form for 2nd Year Placement is available Monday, March 12th - Monday, April 30th.

  3. Choose your passion

    Apply online

    3. Rank your preferences.

    4. Support your 1st choice: Tell us why you think you should be considered for your program of choice.

  5. Questions about Second Year Placement?

How do I apply for placement?

Apply online.  Click on the blue CWL button above, using your CWL login and password.

    When can I apply?

You can apply online between March 12th and April 30th (click on the blue button above).

    How are applications evaluated?

Your evaluation is based on a combination of your first-year average and your personal statement. If your first choice program is full, we will try to place you in your second choice program, and if that’s full, we’ll look at your third choice, etc.  All students will be placed in a second year program.

Do I have to list ALL the programs in order of preference?

It’s up to you how many programs you list, but if you only list a small number and don’t get into any of them, you will not be able to register in 2nd year.  Keep your options open: List as many choices as are viable for you – the more the better.

What if I change my mind about the order of my preferences?

You can change your preferences any time until the application deadline, April 30th.  Just login again and resubmit your form with the changes. Remember that if you change your first choice, you might also want to edit your personal statement.

What are the minimum GPAs needed for each program ?

The minimum GPA for each program changes from year to year, based on supply and demand.  If more students with higher averages apply for a program than in previous years, then the minimum GPA is likely going to be higher; if fewer students apply or if the students who apply have lower averages than in previous years, then the minimum GPA will be lower.  Choose your preferences based on your interests rather than on GPA.

Do I have to write a personal statement?

Yes.  Your application will be considered incomplete if you do not include a 500-word personal statement.  Your statement will strengthen your application.  Although students' grades are important, we recognize that there is more to you than just your grades.

When will I hear which program I am placed in?

Current UBC Engineering students: you will be notified of your placement by mid-June. Check your account for your placement and registration date/time.

Students transferring into UBC Engineering: you will be placed over the summer, after you have been admitted to UBC. Check your account for your placement and registration date/time.

    When can I register?

Current UBC Engineering students: Registration for 2nd year will take place July 9-13th.  You can register on or after the day and time assigned to you.  It is best to register as soon as you are able.  We will email you to let you know your registration time but you can also check the SSC for that information.

Students transferring into UBC Engineering: You will be placed over the summer, after you have been admitted to UBC. You can register once you have received your registration date/time in your SSC account and have been placed in your program.

I received a President Entrance Scholarship (PES), but I have not done so well this year. Does the guarantee still hold?

The guarantee holds so long as you have received the PES, passed at least 27 credits of the first year program and maintained an average of 75%.

    Still have questions?

UBC Engineering Student Services will happily answer your questions.

You can call us 604-822-6556, email us placement@apsc.ubc.ca or drop by our office, during office hours (http://bit.ly/xGODJ5).
