First-year Students

First Year

imagineUBCThe first year of study is common to all programs of engineering. It lays the general foundation for specialization in one of 10 programs, starting in second year. During your first year, most of your courses will focus on Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and English, but you'll also participate in a hands-on Engineering Case Studies course that introduces you to the engineering design process and lets you try your hand at applying engineering principles.

At the end of first year, you'll be asked to choose a specialization. You'll find that there are a limited number of places in each program, so not everyone gets their first choice–all the more incentive to work hard in first year to keep your grades up.
