First-year Students

for general advising

You do not normally need to consult an advisor before registering.

If you have any questions about admission to engineering, you can speak to an undergraduate advisor in Engineering Student Services. Our friendly staff members can help you plan your first year and refer you to specific department advisors if necessary.

General Information

The majority of standard timetables for first year contain all of the courses that form the first-year program, with the exceptions of ENGL 112 and the humanities elective. However, a limited number of standard timetables have been prepared with alternate MATH courses.

Students with little or no prior learning in calculus are encouraged to register for a standard timetable in which MATH 180 replaces MATH 100.

Certain high school prerequisites must be satisfied prior to taking MATH 100 or MATH 180. Details may be found on the website for the Department of Mathematics.

Other standard timetables are available in which MATH 100 and MATH 101 can be replaced by the honours versions of the same course, MATH 120 and MATH 121. The honours mathematics courses are only available if the student has been invited to register in the honours mathematics courses by the Department of Mathematics. If you intend to register for the honours mathematics course, please contact the Engineering Student Services Office.

Students that have successfully completed UBC’s Science One program will receive credit for CHEM 154, MATH 100, MATH 101 and PHYS 153.
