CEME Micro Lab

Undergraduate Computer Lab

This information applies to the microlabs in CEME rooms 2210 and 2212. Labs are open for individual use when not in use by class or tutorial. See schedule posted outside of labs.

About the Microlabs

The CEME MicroLab includes CEME 2210 and CEME 2212, which are for the use of engineering students taking engineering courses. The software is identical in both rooms. These facilities are provided by the Faculty of Applied Science.

Additional undergraduate computing services vary with the departments in the faculty. Please check your departmental office for details.

Accessing Microlab Computers

  • Logging onto system:
    • Logon information is noted on the front of each machine.
  • Internet access:
    • Internet connection has been limited to on campus use only. There is no off campus access.

Assistance in the Microlabs

Specific course-related support is usually provided by teaching assistants who are hired by the departments to support scheduled courses.

There is no documentation available for any of these systems. Check with either the Library, UBC Bookstore or your favourite technical bookstore for possible material.

Reporting Issues

If you find something wrong or even incongruous,  e-mail with a description of the situation and we'll try to remedy the problem.

E-mail: cemelab@apsc.ubc.ca

Printing

The CEME MicroLab is the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 4100 dtn Postscript printer located in CEME 2210 and is available for student use as a cost-recovered print service.

In order to use the printer, students must have a Faculty of Applied Science printing card and then follow the Printing Instructions. Instructions on how to acquire a printing card are posted on the bulletin board in CEME 2210.

  • Printing costs $0.08 per image
  • The lab machines default to two-sided printing.
  • You can change to one-sided printing but the cost will not change. Our print manager software charges for the image, not the sheet of paper

Network Access and Usage

Computers have direct access to the UBC campus network only. There is no off-campus access.

Note that there are implicit ethical aspects in using the Internet from lab machines. No games or sites that are in violation of any UBC regulation. Please respect your fellow students and don't monopolize our machines for the web when there are lineups for classwork.
