for students
The UBC Faculty of Applied Science is committed to helping our students maximize success in winning awards, scholarships and various types of recognition for their achievements both internal and external to UBC. There are four types of awards available; please read the information below carefully as it describes each award and outlines the appropriate process for application.
Four Types of Awards/Scholarships/Recognition:
- Department/Program-recommended Awards
- APSC Faculty-nominated Awards
- Student (self)-nominated Awards
- Bursaries
1. Department/Program-recommended Awards
Review the UBC Scholarships and Awards website and award search database for a list of available scholarships, awards and prizes that you may be eligible for.
- The award search is a listing of UBC awards that provides award descriptions for faculty, donor, and student reference.
- Please check back often as the site is a reflection of awards confirmed at any given point in time.
These awards are automatically considered by your Department/Program and are not intended to be a list of awards that students can apply for.
The selection process varies by department/program, as described below. Please ensure your faculty representative is aware of your co-curricular accomplishments so they can best ascertain your accomplishments. Please refer to the list of departmental and program representatives to find out your departmental/program contact person.
2. APSC Faculty-nominated Awards
Applied Science utilizes a committee-based process to manage student award nominations when a nomination from the Dean is required. This provides a fair and supportive process that serves all stakeholders (departments and students) equitably.
All major awards for students requiring a Dean’s letter or nomination will be handled by this APSC Undergraduate Engineering Student Awards, Scholarships & Recognition Committee. The awards committee meets three times per year. Please see the Undergraduate Engineering Student Awards, Scholarships & Recognition Committee Terms of Reference for more details on the committee structure and process.
At the Engineering Department/Program level, Department representatives will handle awards where a Head’s/Director’s letter of nomination would be more appropriate.
HOW TO APPLY:
Step 1:
Review the APSC Faculty Student Awards, Scholarships and Recognition Database for additional engineering-related awards, scholarships and prizes that you may be eligible for. Please note this list is not exhaustive. As we strive to create a comprehensive database for students, please tell us if you are aware of an award/scholarship that is not yet listed.
Step 2:
Awards will be advertised in the weekly e-nEUSletter and/or the WiE newsletter. In most cases, the process for nomination will be clearly outlined. For those rare instances that students self-determine eligibility, contact your Department/ Program representative to discuss a possible nomination and continue to Step 3.
Step 3:
Upon determination of eligibility (in consultation with your Dept representative), gather the following materials to complete your nomination packet by the appropriate deadline identified on the database.
- Nomination form
- Letter of intent, outlining why you are the appropriate person to be nominated for the award
- CV/Resume
- SISC download
Step 4:
Make a copy of your application packet for your reference.
Step 5:
Request a letter of support or nomination from your Engineering Department to be supported by the Dean.
Step 6:
The APSC Undergraduate Engineering Student Awards, Scholarships & Recognition Committee will review all nomination packets and notify you of your status at least one week before the application deadline.
3. Student (self)-nominated Awards
Step 2:
Upon determination of eligibility, apply directly for the award.
4. Bursaries
Bursaries are applied for directly through Student Financial Assistance and Awards. Please visit the types of financial support page to find more information about the bursary programs that require a student application.
