TA Training

Overview

The Faculty of Applied Science provides sessions for departments that require new TAs to complete a mandatory four-hour training as part of their job requirements. The training is delivered in one session and needs to be completed during the first term of the TA appointment. For further information, please view the FAQ section below.

For 2011/2012 the department of Chemical & Biological Engineering will be providing their own sessions.

A self-enrolled Vista course has also been set up for the TA training: Vista course for TA training

Q: If I've TA'd before, do I need to take the training?
A: Yes. All TA's in Applied Science must take the TA training. However, you only need to complete the training once.

Q: What topics will be covered in the session this year?
A: This year two main topics will be covered. (1) The TA-Student Relationship; (2) Grading/Marking Practices.

Q: I've attended other workshops/training sessions related to TAing, am I still obligated to take this one?
A: Yes. Even if you've taken a TA training course at a different UBC faculty, previous university, or have attended teaching workshops in the past, you are still required to take the TA Training offered by APSC.

Q: Do I get paid to take the training?
A: Yes. All TA's who take the training will be paid for the four hours. Payment is already included in the TA appointment.

Q: Can I take the training more than once?
A: No. Because of limited space only new TAs can participate in the main session. If voluntary follow-up workshops are offered, they will be open to all TAs.

Q: Can I take the training over more than one day?
A: No. The training must be completed in one session.

Q: What happens if I don't take the TA training?
A: Failure to complete the training will prevent you from getting any further jobs as a TA in the Faculty of Applied Science.

Q: How can I sign up?
A: Visit the self-enrolled Vista course for TA Training page. The access code required to self-enroll is: tat2011. Once enrolled, you can sign up for one training sessions. The Vista course website will be used to track your completion of the TA training. You will also be required to sign in on the day of the session.
